NASA’s Ingenuity helicopter does a slow spin test of its blades, on April 8, 2021, the 48th Martian day, or sol, of the mission. That data is expected to come back to Earth later Monday, and on subsequent days. Offsetting this challenge slightly is the low gravity on Mars, which is just 38% as strong as gravity on the surface of Earth. “They flew three more flights that day, higher and farther than the first one. “If we can scout and scientifically survey Mars from the air with a thin atmosphere, we can certainly do the same in a number of other destinations across the solar system, like Titan or Venus,” said Bobby Braun, director of planetary science at JPL. by Alan Boyle on April 15, 2021 at 6:47 pm April 15, 2021 at 6:49 pm. The so-called “burn” was always going to be “a rather nerve-wracking 27 minutes,” in the words of one EMM spokesperson. Once the software fix was validated using testing environments on Earth, the update was uploaded to Ingenuity and a nominal spin up test was successfully completed, clearing the way for the first flight on 19 April.
